Given the increasing number of civil staff employed by the Police Service, now is the time to consider extending Narpo membership to retired police civil staff.  What do we think?

I spotted this when surfing the net to find that Narpo HQ sent the attached Circular 33 (click here) to all Branch Secretaries prior to the 2010 National Conference.  The document is self explanatory. Although the conference has since taken place, I am sure this is a subject upon which the membership may wish to express an opinion

I think it will be a forward move for NARPO to admit Police Civil Staff.  There is no real argument against their admission.  The increase in membership can only increase our political clout and strengthen the organisation.  In addition, they have been admitted to Police Sports clubs etc.

Never mind just NARPO – civil staff should be Federation members.  Over the years the Police Federation have refused to face up to the fact that things can change, have stuck their heads in the sand and been blind to what has been going on in the police force they are members of.

We have had police civil staff working in front line jobs for years bringing to the job incredible expertise in all sorts of fields.  There are a lot of crimes that have been detected as a result of their efforts that would never have been detected without them.  They are just as loyal to the forces they serve as any police officer and deserve the right, if not during their working life then at least in their retirement, of a better service than they will get from their unions.

Given the opportunity most would have joined the Federation but perhaps that would have upset many a police agenda.  It is not good for a workplace to be divided into bands of us and them.  We should sort out our rules to enable police staff to be NARPO members.

When some years ago I put a motion forward at London Branch AGM that London Branch leave NARPO and form our own organisation a strong view against the motion was that 'it is better to belong to the larger organisation for the extra influence  bigger membership gives'.

Given that huge Trade Unions and similar organisations exist to represent their retired members there must be little attraction to join NARPO.
